APRIL
MISSING ALL OF MY STUDENTS AND HOPE EVERYONE IS KEEPING SAFE AND HEALTHY. WE WILL GET THROUGH THIS TOGETHER. MESSAGE ME WHENEVER YOU NEED ME. I CAN'T WAIT TO GET BACK TO SCHOOL AND SEE ALL OF MY KIDS AGAIN. UNTIL THEN MY KIDS CAN WORK ON KHAN ACADEMY, GO FORMATIVE, PRODIGY AND GOOGLE CLASSROOM. LINKS TO MY ZOOM SESSIONS ARE ON MY HOME PAGE AND IF ANYONE NEEDS THEIR USER NAMES OR PASSWORDS PLEASE EMAIL ME. HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL SOON.

MARCH
Happy March! It was wonderful seeing so many of you at Parent Teacher Conferences last week. Our class will finish our study of Rational Numbers and move into our study of Inequalities, Expressions & Equations, Area, Circumference, Surface Area, Nets, and Volume. I can’t believe how quickly this year is flying by! Students will receive their third term progress reports soon. Please review them with your child. As always, contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

February
Welcome to a new and exciting month of mathematics! We will be taking our Unit Test on the 10th and 11th of this month. Make sure your child studies his/her notes and completes the Study Guide. This will help them prepare for the test. It’s hard to believe, but we are halfway through the year and are moving into our next unit, Rational Numbers. We will define positive, negative, and neutral numbers, opposites, and integers. We will find integers on a number line and we will represent real life situations using integers. Finally, get ready for February vacation! I will be posting assignments on Khan Academy for my students to complete, for extra credit, over the break.

January
Welcome to 2020! We are continuing our study of rates and ratios. We have incorporated the study of algebraic expressions and properties into our mathematical repertoire. The kids are really working hard to wrap their minds around using letters in math instead of numbers. We are also learning that numerical expressions have numbers and operations but algebraic expressions have numbers, operations, and symbols. Terms, variables, coefficients, and constants are just a few of the new vocabulary words we are learning as we write and solve problems. This unit is a building block to future work in pre-algebra and algebra. We will spend the rest of January discussing expressions, equations, unit rates, and graphing on a coordinate grid.

December
We have begun our Ratio Unit. We have learned that a ratio is a relationship between two (or more) quantities. We have learned that there are three types of ratios and that they can be written in three different ways. We know that the order in which we write ratios matters because it describes a comparison between quantities. We are using our knowledge in order to solve ratio problems. We are learning how to construct tape diagrams and ratio tables. This information helps us to find missing quantities, totals, or differences between objects. We are also learning about equivalent ratios and how to find them and simplify them.

This month we will explore ratios as a relationship between two quantities and learn that unit rate is associated with ratios. We will use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world application problems. We will learn to construct tables of equivalent ratios, tape diagrams, double number lines and finally, equations.

October
We are spending this month discussing ways that numbers are used in our everyday life. We have introduced numbers as factors, multiples, divisors and products so that we can see and understand the relationships between them. My children have been taught
strategies for how to find factors and multiples, least common multiples, as well as greatest common factors. My 6th graders recognize the fact that every whole number can be written in exactly one way as a product of prime numbers. We have just taken our first unit test and as a whole were very successful. We have reviewed our long division skills and are moving on to fractions. We will discuss fractions on a number line as well as review addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions It is my primary goal as your child’s teacher to help each child develop sound mathematical habits.

September
WELCOME!!! This is going to be a very exciting school year for both parents and students. I am looking forward to working with you throughout the school year to make this an awesome experience. Focus areas this month for students, teachers, and parents will be to get acquainted and familiar with expectations and classroom procedures. In math this month we will be focusing on a short review of basic skills, problem solving strategies, as well as, introducing our new unit based on number sense.
